Minor White once admitted, “I have discovered that camera is both a way of life and not enough to live by.” Life has a way of making you feel inadequate. Before the rise of Trump, before the devastation of Puerto Rico, before the persecutions of Latinx peoples, before the travel ban, before the nuclear standoff between Rocket Man and Orange Man, before Charlottesville, before the persecution of the Rohingya, I felt confident about the future. I felt people of color were becoming better represented in the body politic, LGBTQ were being acknowledged as fellow human beings, that people’s well being and health were being looked after. So photography as a way of expressing wonder and exploring myself were sufficient exercises in being. Not I am not so sure.
