Yesterday was the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on The World Trade Center. At that time I worked on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street and so if you looked straight down 5th Avenue you could see the whole bloody debacle unfold. I remember clearly confusion and terror reigned. All I could think about was how to get to my wife and three year old daughter uptown.
The day after on 9/12 I learn that one of my best friends’ brother was missing. They were both Police Officers. Later on we find out that he perished in the South Tower. Years later my friend come down with a lung ailment directly related to her being part of the rescue efforts down at World Trade Center.
16 years on and it seems very few people really care anymore. “Never Forget”, the slogan everyone was shouting back then. Never is a very short time. I have a 14 year old who was not alive at the time and only understands the events as History. I barely heard a peep about 9/11 commemoration events yesterday. I guess 9/11 didn’t really change anything. It just made a few people’s lives a lot worse and became the pretext for a phony war. On second thought in the hands of the Republicans it made things much, much worse. Endless wars, countless people dying for no reason in faraway lands we have no business being in. The refugee crisis and ISIS in the Middle East are direct consequences of actions taken by The Bush Administration in response to the 9/11 attacks. I guess this really is a Post 9/11 world.
