What responsibility does the artist have to his time? What is the artist relationship to time? Certainly the time in which an artist lives shapes his or her art. But does an artist have a responsibility to the time in which he finds himself? During World War II Edward Weston was asked why he only made images of landscapes and peppers. There was a war going in and surely there was something better he could do to contribute to the war effort. But did he?

I think of this as I am isolating myself just like thousands of others in this time of Corona in the US (and really the entirety of the planet). Do I have a responsibility to document what is going on in my community? Do I make a record for posterity? Surely there are hundreds of dedicated documentary photographers and reporters who are far more capable than I.

No my responsibility as an artist is to document my relationship to this time. To describe the way I fit into my surroundings. How I reflect the times and how the times are reflected in and through me and my camera. I am hoping that my series, Passing Time does just that.
