How To Finish A Song

At the end of last year I decided I was going to (for lack of a better term) finalize 3 series of images that have been hanging around my psyche and hard drive. I decided that instead of trying to show them in a gallery I was going to self publish them via Blurb and let the book be the final product. This has been a tradition with Japanese photographers for decades. So if it is good enough for Moriyama-san it was good enough for me. Plus I think this is the most economical and efficient way of having hard copies of the images I want to share more widely, whether for a competition or just to pass on to aspiring photo students. Plus it will give some organization to a core of image files on my hard drive. If you don’t ever finish and sing that song then nothing has been accomplished.

The first of these was, A Pocket Full Of Nothingness and was the first FOS publication. FOS being like Moriyama’s, Record, a publication created mainly to share his photographs plain and simple. No grand statement or theme. So the second FOS book which I think will be ready sometime in March or April will be, Up. Some of these images were in a gallery show at Soho Photo. It was a group show with John Paul Caponigro.  This was back in 2013 and while the images were reviewed well nothing else happened with the images. Through the next few years I made some images that would fit in well with the series and so now I plan on sequencing them and creating FOS #2. I am already envisioning FOS #3 : Imaginary Polaroids

I figure the FOS series will at least enable me to have a comprehensive record of my photography for posterity. Who knows maybe one day a storage unit filled with hard drives and remainders of FOS will be purchased and the lucky buyer will make me Vivian Mayer famous. A lot of bloody good that would do me, ha!
