Force Of Seeing

I recently completed a photo series which became FOS X – The Light From A Star. I shot those photos over a period of 2 years. Usually when I complete a series such as this I am at a loss for what to do next. There is usually a period of uncertainty and slight depression. I am still not sure what my next big series will be, I am experimenting with some ideas but stll not sure in whihc direction I want to head.

Street photography is dead for me. It is too popular and easy a genre. Although to do anything well takes effort. But the bar for entry is pretty low. Take a camera and walk out your front door. Since everyone is doing it no one wants their picture taken and will get pretty darn mad if you try. Even younger viewers (in there twenties) of some of my candid street photos will ask me pointedly if I asked for permission. No more street shooting for me. Times have changed.

To try and get out of this period of uncertainty I spent some time at a friend’s house in Ithaca. It’s a beautiful house with huge windows on one wall. I went back to my original philosophy of shooting which is “force of seeing”. Photography is all about looking and seeing. There is some other stuff too but nothing surpasses seeing.

Seeing for me this time meant looking at the light as it came into the house or its effects in the immediate outside surroundings.

I also thought I would try some still life inspired by a Campbells Tomato Soup can. ANDY!

These photos and the taking of them is just excercise to strengthen my photographic muscles. To get me excited about photography,

and to get me outside.
