Some Kind Of Record

We have all been voluntarily constrained within the narrow confines of the familiar and safe. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought normal activity to a standstill and all we artist are left with is the need to make something truthful out of this situation. There have been many visual reactions to the pandemic and I have seen quite a few from friends and fellow artists. Some are funny, some are filled with rage but most are personal and seem to want to reach out to fellow human beings. These latter concentrate on the altered social condition we now find ourselves in; from documenting the empty streets of cities to the fashion of masks.

I tend to take a more personal and idiosyncratic path. I am, like most artist, filled with a need to create some kind of record, not only universal but somehow unique to my spirit. My reaction to this situation I find myself  in seems to deal more with creating a record of things from a somewhat detached viewpoint. A record of shadows and things left behind, of nature carrying on even as it encroaches and transgresses upon our very lives and existence. I hope this does not wind up being grandiose words propping up limp pictures. But that is always the fear of the artist – not living up to one’s own expectations.

The last post back in March (sorry about the inactivity) saw the beginnings of my grappling with my reaction to the pandemic and enforced isolation. This is I hope a continuance and deeper consideration of my reaction.
